updating hp 50g rom
Hi!
I just got a used 50g to replace my original one which had an issue with the lcd (vertical line of dead pixels). It has the 2.08 version of the software, my old one has the 2.15 version. I read it's a risky process to update the software, with the possibility of bricking the calculator. Is there any advantage to updating to 2.15 or not?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Using an SD card is less prone to risks, I think.

HP 50g ROM upgrade using a SD card

Many bugs have been fixed in ROM 2.15. One of them is a problem with nested summations. Just because of that one I would upgrade it, but that’s my opinion only.

RE: updating hp 50g rom
No idea where you read that it's a risky procedure, I don't think I've ever heard off a 50g getting bricked while upgrading and I've read literally hundreds of posts confirming upgrade. The simplest way to do so is with an SD card. You can get the files and instructions from here.

Whether or not it's 'worth it' to upgrade depends on what you plan to do with the 50g, but I'd say it's probably easier to upgrade your new machine than it is to review the changes and assess if they apply to you. It's easy, quick and pragmatically risk-free, so why not just upgrade and know you're using the latest and final ROM version?

RE: updating hp 50g rom
I found a particular version of the ROM (2.10-7) that had Bernard Parisse's interactive geometry application along with his CAS (I think), but those don't make it into 2.15. However, just about every woman and her dog have installed 2.15 by now, because of the many fixes that have been applied since 2.08. A few mad hatters amongst us have probably tried the 2.16 (if indeed they can find a way to extract it) ROM, and I've got a debug4x emulator instance that holds the first-mentioned ROM image just to experiment with the geometry application.

As previous people have said, it's usually safer to put the update files onto an SD card (assuming you've got an empty SD card with enough room for the update files) and do the update that way. You will definitely need a fresh set of batteries, you may be able to get away with plugging the calculator into the USB cable to keep it powered up while it updates, but I can't confirm this works.

another discussion http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-8152.html

also due to the 50g bootloader it seems very unlikely to brick the 50g. Robust/mature device!

Thanks for confirming success. This may help the next person that searches about this to know it's an easy and safe procedure.

Just out of interest, what method did you use? USB connection or SD card?

It could help others make their mind up.

Being neither woman nor dog nor standard I too have kept 2.10-7 as it has the geometry application rather than Streamsmart, which I don't need & believe was never implemented.

All important changes were already in 2.10-7, so no need to update to 2.15.

The changelog that came with 2.15 follows:

Code:

RE: updating hp 50g rom
Another good reason for keeping 2.10-7 is that there is a version for 49G, so no need to have different versions of progs for 50g & 49G.

I used the SD card method. The only tricky part is how long you have to hold on+F3 before pressing + and - to access the "update code" menu. Long story short: about a second.
