All in all I think it's a bad idea.

If one just needs to identify what kind of revision a particular calculator belongs to, only a revision identifier updated for each new change is really necessary. Date/time codes can also identify when a calculator was manufactured, generally with a precision of a week or a month.

(Not advocating for or against serial numbers here, just pointing out facts)
