Poll: Landscape or Portrait?

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
Portrait on one side, landscape on the other. A dual aspect calculator with display and buttons on both sides. Wait, that's silly....

Either is fine as long as one can actually see the display without a magnifying glass (ah, TI?)

Indeed. I have the TI 89 titaneum and the TI Nspire CX. Both have displays with fonts that can be mesured in the Planck scale. Smile

IMHO, the perfect font size stay with the HP48s/g series, (without metakernel), although it is a portrait calculator.

Nah. Nothing beats the Voyagers of old. IMO.

Ok, but I think they are more or less the same size

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
Landscape is very nice for two-handed use on a desktop (as I've been discovering with my new DM-41L), but I've never cared for it for handheld use (like with the 12C I keep in my bill basket). So if I had to pick one or the other, I'd go with portrait for versatility, but if the only concern is desktop use, I think landscape has a slight edge.

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
I like the HP landscape models the way they are, 71, 15, 12, etc. and the portrait, 50, 42, etc the way they are. Not sure about the SwissMicros reordering of portrait keyboards as landscape. Either way, I'll probably buy a couple of 42L's no matter which format they have.

Dave, as a handheld, just use a landscape calculator like the whole world use a smartphone or tablet for typing: with the two thumbs. You get all versatility that you may want with a landscape.

Have a nice weekend for you all

That's not too bad as far as grip, but the drawback is that you end up with just your right thumb to work the numbers, as opposed to two or three fingers on your preferred dominant hand.

I make it a rule to always type with at least three thumbs.

(What about a landscape design with the digits in the center, and the functions on either side?)

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
I definitely prefer portrait as I can hold it in the palm of one hand. That's one of the reasons I prefer the HP-38C to its successor, the HP-12C.

Bob

Smile Smile Smile

That was very good, I can't stop laughing...

Actually we only need two thumbs, Massimo, to be fast enough in a landscape calculator, as everybody are doing in their smartphones...
!

But I admit, you have a very good sense of humor, I think all italians have. Thanks

Cheers

In a text, wrong, missing and extra characters happen just about every message and no one cares as they get the meaning. Same phenomena on a calculator is almost certainly going to lead to instant trouble. Even on Voyagers, which I like and use, I need to use the same fingers as on a portrait machine. Don't you?

I understand what you mean, of course there's a difference between typing loosely and crunching numbers, but when you know the keyboard by heart, you can be fast and exact at the same time. And when I'm in portrait calculator, as in 48 or 42s, that I like most, of course I don't use the thumbs, but I know the keyboard as well and, that's the difference, I use only one finger. But in my case, there's not much difference because productivity is not a goal for me anymore.
