(32SII) Programs for Improved Compost Rate Calibration
An excerpt from Programs for Improved Compost Rate Calibration, Compost Science & Utilization, 3:2, 93-96 (1995)

    Compost rate calibration procedures using programmable calculators improve the precision and accuracy of compost application. Two programs, one for English system units of measure and the second for the Metric system, are presented. Both are written in the RPN programming language and support hand-held, portable, programmable calculators, making them suitable for use in the field. Both require inputs of area to be covered and depth of coverage and compute volume of compost required for the specified coverage.

  The general procedure for determining compost application rates,
       V=A*D
   where:
       V = volume of compost applied
       A = area to be covered
       D = depth to be covered
is a straightforward mathematical procedure. However, various mathematical conversions are necessary in order to calculate application volume since the equation parameters may be represented in many different terms … Here we present two programs which make possible the rapid, accurate and precise computation of compost application rates. These programs … are suitable for use in the field to assist the compost user in making management decisions, which
would ensure more accurate and precise compost applications. …

The Programs
  The programs presented in Table 1 are written in the RPN programming language … and will support the Hewlett-Packard HP32SII programmable scientific calculator. However, with minor transcriptional adjustments, these programs will work on programmable calculators produced by other manufacturers, as well.
