I have read that the PC/Android version is a simulator not an emulator, is this correct?

They are all simulators. An emulator would actually replicate the hardware through the use of software. Instead, the simulators are using the same code base but compiled for different architecture. I think officially they are considered "virtual calculators" since you really are running off of the same source code, but not using the same hardware.
