The double-page 42-43 in the July/August 2015 issue (#227) of the "Ocean Navigator" journal has an article about a very recent (2014) usage example for haversines for longhand sight reduction by Hanno Ix and Greg Rudzinski:

It is based on an older method proposed by R. Doniol in the 1950s-1970s, but refined to only use haversines.
