Certainly such a device would've made more sense: you keep the good parts from previous successful products, you modernize it, you stay compatible, you improve it, and so on.

As has been pointed out innumerable times in the past, the Prime is a continuation of the 38/39/40 series aimed at the educational market. Mostly the public school, K-12 market at that. Whereas the 50g, discontinued years ago, was the apotheosis of the scientific/professional market. That market is now dead, gone, expired, past tense. There will always be a small niche market for handheld scientific calculators (see SwissMicros) and those nostalgic for past Hewlett Packard products (see MoHPC).
