What laptop should I buy?

Yes, consumer laptops, although cheaper, indeed are crap compared to business-class laptops, just like any other kind of equipment.

Acer does make Pro/Business laptops, the TravelMate series, which are still economical (for this class of equipment) but also solid and reliable. I've sold them for more than 10 years, and never had a problem. There are better machines, such as high-end ThinkPads and HP ProBook, but these are much more expensive.
