I decided to implement the 64bit xorshift generator described on page 4 of George Marsaglia's "Xorshift RNG's". It involves shifting the seed 13 bits to the left, followed by 7 bits to the right and then 17 bits to the left, with a bitwise exclusive OR performed after each shift. Any nonzero value can be used as the seed, and according to the author it passes all tests of randomness, except the binary rank test.
