I've found where it used to be, but alas no more.

An hour ago I happend to find a link to a Google books site where Kahan's method for calculating (e^x–1)/x was quoted in a book on the SIAM 100-digit challenge, with the original source listed among the references. Indeed it seems to be the method you posted.
