The problem here is that something with your setup is causing bad scsi commands to hit the device over the USB. Unfortunately, I can't help with anything to diagnose that. Only suggestion is that if you are going through a usb hub, try going directly to the computer. Or try a different port. I once had problems with on of my virtual machines not working properly for updates too. Turns out the usb was set to usb 1.1 in the config or something funny like that.
