I just banged through that calculation near-subconsciously, without giving any thought to the alleged evils of x<>y, and got the same answer.

Which manual did you take this from? I'd like to see the original. But I suspect you're massively over-complicating something that is really quite simple, and possibly misinterpreting the original example.
