The barcode wand provides keypress equivalents, there was a sheet arranged like the face of the calculator with scan codes above each key. I wonder if you could cannibalize the wand and gate across the photodetector or build a loosely coupled LED strobe that would mimic the bar-code timing.

There was an old C64 wand that detected the retrace on the CRT and gave you a stylus. I wonder if you could hold the bar code wand up to a glyph on the LCD and strobe it between light and dark states to provide download to a calculator?
