It looks like the author of that book has seen a meaning in every word that started with an E. ;-)
So I wouldn't take this too serious. Here is the original quote from HP Key Notes V2N2, May 1978:

Series E is Here!

On April 17 Hewlett-Packard announced the new Series E calculators, an extensive low-end product line that presently includes five new machines.

You could just as well interpret the E as "economy", i.e. low budget series. Which might make more sense. The following year Nikon instroduced the EM camera along with some "SeriesĀ E" lenses. Here the E indeed referred to a low-end economy model. But again that's just guessing.
