What good is an HP plotter?

I find it most rewarding to connect a plotter to a calculator (hp48). Not too difficult to write a calc program for plotting functions after finding out a few facts about the plotter (ticks/mm, coordinate origin...) (hpmuseum.net for manual)

Inkscape (on linux) can output HPGL.
