HP82161A Digital Cassette Drive - knife31 - 02-14-2024 12:19 AM

I am having trouble getting the Drive to be recognized by the HPIL Loop. The cables are good and it sees my printer which works fine. The drive worked a couple of months ago, so not sure what the problem is.

I tried running the DIR, STOPIO, and AUTOIO commands and the drive does nothing. Cleaned the connectors just in case. When a tape is inserted the drive rewinds the tape to the beginning.
Any help would be appreciated.
Randy

If your drive is dead, I would like to buy it (few money). Why buying a dead cassette player? Hide that stuff in the picture in it (for fun; no 100% necessity).

And: if your cassette recorder is dead, just use a PI2 with USB Stick on it instead of buying another on eBay (like in the picture; hopefully you have a pilbox and an HP-IL module).

What’s a ‘P12 with USB attached please?

A Raspberry Pi 2, which runs an emulation of HP-IL, and you could then use a USB disk as a cassette drive.

See i.e. here for more info:

Don't think I'm ready to give up the ghost yet, cuz I have a perfectly good "PPC Journl PGMS V9&10 1984, cassette" that I would like to use (Along with a bunch of others). Hopefully I won't have to buy a new drive. I will look into the P12.
PS: It's nice to have folks you can ask questions!

There's one for sale in the Classified section.

If you can't get it working, I'd be happy to extract the files from the tape and copy them to a LIF volume file you can access via ILPer/PIL-Box. I'd probably be willing to do several, but that depends on how many "a bunch" means.

Contact me by email to follow-up if interested.

I think that one was for parts but will look again. Going to do a bit of research. The machine worked not too long ago so can't think of why it would not work now. May be that for some reason the HP-IL has been told to ignore it.
Weird I used the Cat 7 function of the CCD Mod and it worked. Tried the DIR function of the HP-IL and it does nothing. This is going to be a deep Rabbit-Hole.

Stranger still now it works with the DIR command and either works correctly or shows "Drive Error or Medm Err" depending on the tape (Randomly it seems). I guess I will have to check out the tapes using the stuff I read in the forums. I did have to fix the PPC Tapes felt and it read it, once at least.

Oh
Mr Prosperi thanks for the offer.

Have you cleaned the tape head itself?

RE: HP82161A Digital Cassette Drive - knife31 - 02-16-2024 05:23 AM

I did clean the heads

It reads other tapes so it must be just this tape. Of course it would be the PPC Module Tape. I saw a wrinkle in the tape, not sure how to get it out.
