Eric,

Many of the books on industrial design seem to just be full of pretty pictures, with little explanation of how the designs are to be manufactured, and no explanation at all of the tradeoffs necessary for manufacturability.

I just came across your post again. Please let me add one can study "Industrial Design" (at least in Germany) which makes me think it must be more complex than being teachable in a single book. And yes, good industrial designers know a lot about manufacturing - they even focus on particular manufacturing methods. I know that doesn't help you personally but just for the record.

Would it be possible to see a Landscape form factor version, like the Voyager series ?

Yes, it certainly would, in principle. Though I ...
  1. didn't design any yet so I can't show you one,
  2. think our limited design force should be kept focussed on a portrait 43S (instead of splitting it in two, decelerating progress to half the speed of a snail),
  3. don't know whether it would make much sense since the 43S is built around its breathtaking display featuring about 58.8 mm × 35.3 mm visible area. This is much greater than any Voyager display seen so far and blows Voyager size anyway.
But since YMMV, feel free to design one.
