WTF? W-here T-o F-ind the original hpmuseum forum?
Message #1 Posted by Alexander Oestert on 5 Dec 2013, 7:28 a.m.

I haven't been around for a while. This erstwhile very cozy HP museum seems to have morphed into the official HP Prime support forum, while the people at HP constantly send me emails assuring me that they still monitor my defective HP 15C LE but actually don't do a thing about it.

Strange world - I'm getting too old for this...

Hallo Alexander,

Don't despair. The present "Primania" will soon cool down, I guess, when the next new pig runs through our little forum village. Oiiiik!

I hope it will cool down long before the next pig comes running. When I look into the forum, it's Prime, Prime, Prime from top to bottom - sooner or later the topic must run dry. The thing has only so and so many bytes of ROM and after every single one has gotten it's own thread, there must come a natural end!

In the meantime I was able to get a very nice HP-10C for a reasonable price (obvoiusly the Prime distracts the collectors from the vintage pieces ;-) ) closing another gap in my collection.

Regards Max

You mean, you have a complete collection of all HP pocket calculators? Wow! Enviable in a way, but hunting for pieces is an important part of the fun.

I started to collect some other models e.g. Commodore PR-100 and TI-58 & 59.

Opportunistic "hunting" has given me some interesting pieces, e.g. an early TI-81 without backup battery and an interesting financial calculator, the TI FIA-10.

There is always something more to hunt :-)

Yes. I even started collecting Swatches in the meantime since prices for HP calculates went through the roof!

And just today I "won" an auction for a HP-34C. Another gap filled and the "30 series" (I can't and don't want to remember the stupid names they give their calculators - what's wrong with numbering things that are built to deal with numbers?) finally completed. Thank you Prime, without you, I wouldn't have gotten it for a price I can afford :-)

I'm responsible for some of the Prime noise here; and I guess to some of the more seasoned members here it may seem overwhelming... but enthuaism is enthuaism. I'm looking into hosting an alternative site soon... just not up to speed yet on Amazon hosting services, which forum software to use... blah, blah, blah :)

If anyone here is good at that type of thing, there is a definite need for a quality Q/A and bug reporting site. A site that doesn't scream with adds and distractions. Just text on the screen and people helping people (like here).

Soon the Prime will have its own forum. Emulators and third party firmware - which caused the last round of "what happened to my forum?" will also have their own forum. The new forum software makes it easy to create additional categories if needed.

Coming soon...

How about you add a filter to the forum that eliminates all these whiner threads. It would definitely free up a lot of space.

That will be very useful. Thanks.

If I could make two suggestions:
Allow us to upload files with more than 8.3 character filenames: it's hard to describe what the file is in 8 characters.
Allow us the ability to create wiki type content.

There already is a wiki place, and it's even got spots for the Prime. Go here:

The TI-Planet hpwiki contains a number of pieces of information not found on wiki4hp, e.g. about the linking protocol, or firmware upgrades, including third-party modifications to the firmware.

I'm a moderator on three different forums using phpBB version 3, the most active being forum.6502.org. I'm an administrator on two. There's very little I don't like about phpBB. It does have a ton of options for the administrator to set up though, and it could be that something you don't like could be corrected there. There are so many of these options, in different categories, that it can be hard to find the one you want. That doesn't mean it's not there though.

If phpBB is able to replicate the clean, unobtrusive, message sorting and presentation options of the current software then that's ok for me.

Oh yes, it's Unicode/UTF-8. This got in gear when Cyrille asked if I could convert the existing forum to Unicode, and after some study, I determined that I could, but the amount of work was sufficient to make me investigate new forums. (For example the documentation on one of the functions used by the current forum says you can call it with unicode, but if any character is >255, it will die. Lovely....)

I've wanted to switch forum software several times but each time there was resistance to some unspecified new thing. But the last time I asked was maybe 5 years ago, and lately I've noticed growing and on-going dissatisfaction with this old software so I think it's time to replace it. The new stuff has been running for a few days. Just getting a little more tuning and adjusting before I invite everyone in. Real soon now...

That would ease discussions really a lot but require an equal lot of space on the forum. No idea about the consequences.

Many other forums that I frequent limit the size or quantity of image files that can be uploaded to prevent abuse. So, you won't have people uploading their entire collections just to brag about them.

Yes the new software allows uploading images. So does the current/old software, but the new software is much more obvious about that since there's an upload button right in the posting form.

Also, I'm setting up the new software so everyone gets space by default as opposed to the old software where you had to ask. The new forum will start with 3MB per user. The old forum started with 0 and the largest number on the request form was 2MB, though 4 people have requested and received larger quotas.

Currently we have 52 guest directories with an average use of 0.4MB per "user with directory" and the largest is around 4MB. I expect not having to ask and having the button right on the posting form will substantially increase uploads per user. If it doesn't go up that much, then I might increase the default quota beyond 3MB.

Hello Dave, I don't want to have a preview of the new forum but i think that most of the users here complaining about the Prime thread are probably annoyed by the fact that there are a lot of comments about the Prime filling the screen of comments for the same thread.

Did you consider the possibility to see the title of the thread a la comp.sys.hp48?

In this way a hp97 thread would have the same dignity of a Prime one. I personally think that having a separate forum for the prime is not necessary.

I think that the number of threads would reduce as soon as bug(s) will be solved and as soon as we feel comfortable with its approach to mathematics and programming.

Thanks

Giancarlo
