Battery Holder 41CV

I own an old HP41CV.It was working and all of a sudden itswitch on only for a second and the batteries are gone and very hot.I have noticed that the positive ends(points) on batteries do not touch direct on the springs of the battery holder,bet go on the sides of these springs.I also noticed that not all four sections of the battery holder have the metal(the stainless sort of steel inside of the battery holder) which direct the batteries.Can this be the cause of the problem.I have seen new battery holders on Ebay and I wonder if it is advisable to buy one to solve my problem.
