PRIME Lockup after pressing Enter key in Solver.

I have written two equations in the Numeric Solver 1. mass= mu*Freq2* Length*2/Gravity * nloops^2 for standing waves on a string and 2. VolCylinder=Pi* radius^2* height for a cylinder. 3 focallength= (1/objdis) + (1/imgdis) for the thin lens equation

I had unchecked the first two equations when I was entering the third equation in the symbolic menu. When I pressed the enter key the calculator locked up. I get no response from any key and it is still locked up after more than 20 minutes. Any idea as to what gives? Is there any way I can reset the machine and at least have the first two equations still be there.

You can reset the calculator by inserting a pin through the small Reset hole in the back of the case. It should not delete anything.

I was able to finally get it to reset using the ON key and Symb key combination found in the users manual. However the last equation I was trying to enter was gone as well as the three variables I had previously established. Glad I did not have to use the paperclip reset.

Where did you find this in the Users Guide ? Is there a separate User Manual that I don't know about ?

In the emulator install directory you'll find HP_Prime_User_Guide_EN.pdf. Look for "Reset" or "Troubleshooting" or go directly to page 597 in Acrobat Reader.

You can find the July 2013 version of the User Guide at http://www.hpcalc.org/ in the new Prime section (click on the "Documentation" link there). It has 616 pages.

Yes, I already have that latest version, but it lacks the info that is described in this thread. It may have been in the earlier May version, and then removed.

OK, the mystery is solved.

There are two versions of the Users Guide:

Version dated May 2013 - Located in Emulator install directory of computer hard drive. Contains an Appendix B - Troubleshooting that begins on page 531, and discusses various key sequences to achieve a reset or restore of default settings. No mention of reset button on back of calculator.

Version dated July 2013 - Downloaded from online links. Contains an Appendix B - Troubleshooting that begins on page 591 and contains only a description of how to reset the calculator via the reset button on the back of the calculator.

Here is the text Troubleshooting Calculator not responding If the calculator does not respond, you should first try to reset it. This is much like restarting a PC. It cancels certain operations, restores certain conditions, and clears temporary memory locations. However, it does not clear stored data (variables, apps, programs, etc.). To reset Press and hold On and SYMB keys simultaneously, and then release them. If this doesn’t work, you should restore factory settings (see below). To restore factory settings If the calculator does not respond to a reset (see above), you should restore factory settings. This will entirely erase the calculator’s memory. You will lose everything you have stored. 1. Press and hold ON then APPS and then ESC. 2. Release all keys in the reverse order.

If the calculator does not turn on If the HP Prime does not turn on, follow the steps below until the calculator turns on. You may find that the calculator turns on before you have completed the procedure. If the calculator still does not turn on, contact Customer Support for further information.

1. Press and hold ON for 10 seconds, then release.

NOTE This is where the second key to press is not obvious Have no idea as to what key "?" is.

2. Press and hold On and ?simultaneously ?, then release?, then release On. 3. Press and hold On,?,and? simultaneously. Release ?, then release ?, and then release On. 4. Remove the batteries, press and hold On for 10 seconds, then put the batteries back in and press On.

I think ? is the spacebar key between to the . and + keys.

I tried to duplicate and was unsuccessful (worked fine). Some questions might be helpful.

1. RPN mode? 2. I assume you put the variables in EXPORT in the app program? 3. Any strange behaviors before this?

Only thing to do is ON-APPS. If you hadn't turned the unit off before, then no, it has not been written out to flash and it may be gone.
