New HP15C Priced at $129
Message #1 Posted by DaveJ on 24 July 2011, 7:17 a.m.

This supplier has it listed:
http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/HP_15C_SCIENTIFIC_CALCULATOR/NW250AAABA/11421304/

with an MSRP or $129
But they have it on sale for $80.52

Dave.

The 15C market on ebay will no doubt plummet.
Gone instantly will be the market of enthusiasts who still buy them to use.

I wonder if they have nailed the battery life, or still run the thing at a crazy high frequency?

as i recall there was a simple(ish) patch that could be made to the 15c rom to double the available memory space when run on the nonpareil emulator. given the new hardware will have more than enough spare ram available, i wonder if (1) the new 15c will make use of this extra ram, or (2) if someone will be able to do a little hacking of the (new) firmware package to implement said end result...

Bonjour Joel,

Have you attempted to order it from here ?

This reseller previously showed that they expected stock in early September, although they now do not show an eta.

Anyways, I have to believe that HP has resellers throughout the world that will be carrying this product.

Now I can't wait for it! When we eventually receive these calculators, I wonder who in this community will receive Serial Number 00001?

In any event, they accepted my order but did not charge my credit card account, so the worst that can happen is they don't deliver.

"fast!" is mentioned as a feature.

That can only mean the 15C is running at a high clock rate and will likely chew through the poor CR2032 batteries fairly quickly.

Well I did get an email from TheCalculatorStore containing this:

"The Financial Anniversary model

The second is the 30th anniversary of a current product. After this anniversary release, I have been told that the product "will be put to sleep", in dog's parlance. So it will be time to make our final purchase. Same shape as the above, it will be packed as well as a collector's item."

Though it might be that they will put the 12c 30th AE "to sleep" but it seems likely that the 12c in general will be gone in a few years or less.

I'm sure that the 30th AE will end at some point within the year, but why do you think that HP will discontinue this incredible product that they have? That would be madness.

Did you know that real estate associations give regular for-credit classes courses on how to use an HP-12C. It's not just a calculator it's an institution!

Yes, this just doesn't make sense.
They went to all the effort to redesign the Voyager architecture using the new ARM processor so that they could keep the massively popular 12C alive. (The 15C is just a simple spin-off from that effort, just a different ROM and keycaps basically)

I know nothing about the finance industry, but I was of the understanding that the 12C was THE only calculator to have?
They could probably charge double and still have the same market?

I received this newsletter from thecalculatorstore:

As you know, there is a lot of noise about a couple of new "old" products from HP. Let us elaborate about both of them. As we have seen them in several sites, we don't know if our commitment to keep silent until they are announced is void - in any case, we will refrain from "calling names".

The Scientific Reissue

The first of them has been spotted in the indian HP website, in Japan, and as available in some distributors. It is not: HP confirmed me that is intended to ship in mid september, and that it is not distributed yet anywhere.

It is a scientific calculator with LCD screen, and "in landscape format". It will come in a collector's edition gift box, with a higher quality pouch than its current financial sibling (yet another hint), with a printed manual and a CD with the advanced functions manual and a Windows emulator. It is limited to 10.000 units, and it will be priced around 100 €. I still do not have the final cost number to make my own pricing.

The Financial Anniversary model

The second is the 30th anniversary of a current product. After this anniversary release, I have been told that the product "will be put to sleep", in dog's parlance. So it will be time to make our final purchase. Same shape as the above, it will be packed as well as a collector's item.

For both units I have pictures that I cannot publish - but you can readily find them on the web!

As I do not know the final price, I am not taking any order for any of them - but I am taking reservations. Do not worry - it'll be competitive!

I'll post no link until I am authorised to."

well, well - limited edition means 10 000 units? that's way short of 83 377 predicted by the Bring Back the HP 15C people at hp15c.org :-)

Well, 100 € = 144 USD at the current exchange rate, which is a bit more than the $129 MSRP in the USA. The real question is whether there will be any discounting off MSRP. I ordered mine in the USA at a 37% discount and another reseller is offering a 34% discount.

Also, it would be interesting to see how the projected production run of 10000 units is distributed to the various resellers. I know that one of the USA resellers had ordered 4750 units, which is a bit less than 5% of the total projected number. Maybe 50% USA and 50% for the remainder of the world ?

4750 / 10000 a little less than 5%? Is there a misprint somewhere? Are there actually 100,000 units being made? Or did you mean a little less than 50%? If a single distributor is getting nearly half the available units that won't leave many to go around.

Cheers

Given the US$129 MSRP, I'd guess the wholesale buy price for the dealers is around the $60 mark.

10,000 units at circa $60 is $600K gross income for HP.
So I guess that's the minimum point at which it becomes interesting enough to HP to do a new product. Unless someone was able to convince the powers-that-be to do it for the love.
But of course a large part of the design has been amortized over the new 12C units.

An interesting figure none the less.

Too bad it doesn't work that way. The wholesale price for HP calculators is typically around 75% of MSRP, not the 47% that you are assuming.

I'm actually very surprised that the 15C is being listed for $80 with a claimed MSRP of $129. I suspect the real MSRP is probably closer to $99 given a street price of $80.

The practical difference between $600K and say $750K is pretty moot, so the exact figure doesn't really matter. But thanks for the clarification.

So either the suppliers have the MSRP quite wrong, or this calc has a lower wholesale price, or the suppliers are "doing it for the love" :->

Wouldn't that depend upon the volume, as in most industries? I would assume that Office Depot pays less for a 12c than a reseller who sells 2 or 3 per month.

Somewhat. You can buy from HP's top-level distributor if you do a very high volume, and then you can get the best prices. Otherwise, if you don't sell hundreds of calculators a month, you have to buy from a second-tier distributor. That's what I have to do.

However, it has now gotten ridiculous. Presently I am buying my calculators from Amazon.com just like anyone else, because it is now cheaper for me to buy a calculator on Amazon.com (even in quantities of 1!) than to go through any of HP's second-tier distributors. Yes, that means the wholesale price of, say, an HP 50g is now higher than the Amazon.com price.

It's like HP is trying to put me out of business.

They probably are. As far as they are concerned, the transaction cost for small customers is not worth their time, and that is why they have distributors...and so on...and Direct to Market is effectively a Huge distributor. The same dynamic has occurred with music sales.

Eric, do you plan to sell them?

I ask as well. Erik, I would pre-order two from you immediately, if you state that you will carry or make available within one or two weeks of Samson cables. I have bought from both of you, but I admit, I am partial to buying from you.

Since you are in the US, just order it from the CostCentral site above. You can't beat the ~$89 shipped price going with anyone else. It's not like I'd be making much money off it; I'm sure I'll have to sell them for more than that just to avoid losing money.

Yes, but I do not yet have a specific date so I haven't wanted to list it.

My guess is Samson Cables saw the $80 price, ordered some himself, and figured that he could resell them at a profit for $95. Then he listed it to snatch up the pre-order market.

I would rather not list it for pre-order until I have a specific availability date, because that can lead to false expectations. However, maybe I should just stoop to Samson's level and list it for pre-order as well at the same price, with the same vague timing suggested for delivery.

Hi Eric,

I have already pre-ordered my 15C's with CostCentral but I too have done business with you in the past and would rather buy from you in the future. I am also planning on getting at least one and maybe as many as three of the 30th anniversary 12C calcs. Do you plan on carrying these as well?

Thanks,

Marwan

I plan to carry everything I can get. Just be aware that I won't be the first to get it, nor will I have the best price, because I simply cannot compete with the Neweggs and the Amazon.coms of this world.

To the people who have ordered from CostCentral, did they charge your card when you ordered "today"? Or do they charge only when they ship/have them in stock?

They have not charged my card / bank account. My order appears in their system as "ordered" but not "invoiced". They will not charge me until they process and ship the order.

This is what my Malaysia country dealer wrote to me:

"Hi,Mr Arjunaidi.

Here’s updatedinformation on the 15c Limited Edition from HP

The 15c Limited Edition is a special unit and has not been released as yet, but the user community has heard about it .

It should be available in the Oct time line and can be ordered.

Will send you more info when received.

Thanks

KS TAY"

I am happy it's not so "limited edition" after all :-)
