Any 15c news?
Message #1 Posted by Dave Britten on 15 June 2011, 8:19 a.m.

There were quite a few rumors/reports of a June re-release floating around for a while. Well, it's definitely June now. Anything new happening?

IOW, when hell freezes.

Er, wait, can't use that joke anymore.

So after about 15 years this latest (and probably last) episode has finally been released. That's a game I wouldn't have bet money on coming out.

The release is scheduled to accompany the Rapture, which was recently authoritatively rescheduled for October 21, 2011.

Well, back to our old calculators!!!

Until there is an official (or semi-official) announcement, anybody who knows can't say, and anybody else doesn't know. Anything here is pure speculation and doesn't necessarily have any grounding in reality.

I believe that the calls for a 15c have been around for a long while.

Has HP ever responded in anyway to the calls? For example, saying why it might not happen, not for the for seeable future, etc, etc?

As lowly user, it just seems that HP is a closed shop and to me there's nothing to ever indicate that there will be another scientific RPN, let alone a 15c reissue.

I've tried to use non rpn calculators and find it tough. So my only option is to hope that my HP32sii doesn't flake out on me and HP comes out with something better than the HP35s.

I applaud the repurposing efforts the community is doing and programs written in the past to add a little scientific functionality to some financial rpn calcs from HP. Is this the new way forward, make financial rpn calcs and leave options for repurposing to the rpn community?

I understand that no company would give there roadmap away, but I'd think you'd at least want to let the market know that you're still actively in the market.

Maybe this is all some great marketing strategy from HP that I just don't understand, but surely some teasers would be required to slowly build up the excitment.

Deep down I don't believe that HP will release anything new in the rpn scientific calculator field, but I want/hope they do.

HHC is a big part of that outreach and communication. It has been receiving a lot more support from the HP calc group these past few years and managers have seen the value and benefit of hosting such an event.

Just the fact that we can communicate so much information to people there is very, very unusual in the world of large companies. I can say with absolute certainty that we will not be announcing a 15c re-release at the HHC 2011 conference in September.

There will *hopefully* (depending on when planes have to leave) be about 10 people from the HP calc group at the conference this year. They timed the marketing/business summit to coincide so that many people would be able to go and interact with users.

I will say that if you ever have thought about going to a conference - this should be the one. I will be quiet now.

Unfortunately the energy stored in the teasing springs doesn't exceed the mountain of costs (and scheduled work) for Pauli and me yet. But seems Marcus may go, so the wp34s project team will have at least two eyes and ears in that elitist gathering, provided the number of beers will reach a sufficient amount ;-)

Sufficient amount?

That brings to mind the time a former supervisor hosted a couple of weather scientists visiting from Germany at his home for an evening. Just to help "make them feel at home" he bought a variety of imported beers prior to their visit.

The two visitors drank over $200 worth of beer that evening!

That would be like someone in Europe providing Budweiser or Schlitz to a visiting American! I'd rather try the local brew.

BTW, if/when you're visiting Europe, get the real (= Czech) Budweiser and taste the difference - best at the brewery in Ceské Budejovice :-)

Tim,

The folks that usually attend the HHC conferences, like myself, enjoy the camaraderie first and foremost. My wife calls it geek fest and geek fest paloosa! This year's topics regarding the 41CL and the wp34s alone are worth attending. If HP can show or talk about interesting concepts or projects then we are even happier. It's meeting the people to celebrate their skills (like Geoff Quickfall's uncanny gift to repair vintage calculators) and personalities. I have know many attendees for over 30 years and that is something special!

I think the main achievement of the HP calculator R&D department, namely Cyrille & Tim, lies only a few years back when they chose a platform that is variable enough to

- spit out one new calculator after the other with reasonable effort,
- is documented so that it can be repurposed,
- is fast end versatile enough for serious work.

Thanks HP! If you will not announce what is hoped by the community, we will be able to do the job ourselves. ;-)

I imagine it would be straightforward to repurpose.

The display looks to be very difficult to work with (no/limited alpha) and there is no wide enter key.

Oh you "Pie in the Sky" guys...

HPC will take a slower, more cautious approach than what you've been speculating...

HP is going to re-release the HP-10C+ first and then the 11C+, then quietly release the ill-fated 13C, which, because of negative publicity, force them to abandon the introduction of the 14C, and further delay (for 2-3 years) the eventual re-release of the HP-1[56]C which will maintain the same form factor as the 12C (which should be in its HP-12C Rhodium +SIII variant by then) but have "electronic paper" key tops which will display each keys function as determined by operating mode selected by the user. Well, "user" will be mostly a redundant term as that calculator will not need human interaction and more likely "use" the person handling it to accomplish its (the calculator's) goals via SkyNet.

HP is very tight lipped about any future calculators. The only way I know of to find out anything about their future thinking and plans is to attend the HHC conference (in San Diego this year). At the conference you will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement and in exchange, you *may* learn something about HP's future plans. Both HP and the attendees that the non-disclosure agreement very seriously.

At the very least, you will be treated to one of Tim's thrilling talks about Desiduous trees of North America.
