Cases, especially for 200LX
Message #1 Posted by P.Hart on 4 Aug 2009, 10:04 a.m.

I bought a HP 200LX second-hand about twenty years ago (and it still works fine) contained in a black leather wallet which seemed to be made to measure. The 200LX fits snugly in a pocket on one side. There are four slit pockets on that side and four on the other, each pocket able to accommodate a SRAM card for the 200LX. The two sides fold together to close and are secured with a strap with press stud. “GENUINE LEATHER” is embossed inside the wallet. There are some letters embossed very faintly on the outside in two lines within a rectangular cartouche which might read in part “ ???? POCKET”, “P S HIDE”. Does anyone know whether my case is an accessory provided by Hewlett Packard? Or what other provenance it might have?

On the subject of cases, I have bought new HP machines 71B, 41C, 48SX, 49G, 49g+ and 50g. The zipped cases for the first three could be scrunched up and stuffed in a pocket and the 49G could be held in its cover while the instrument was in use, but what do you do with the stiff, awkward cases for the last two while wandering around using the calculator? Is this yet another sign that HP calcs are no longer made by people who know how they are used?

That's my exact grievance with the 35s case. The stupid thing is so large and rigid that it makes the calculator no more portable than a 48! But of course, they did make the calculator just a tiny bit larger, so that it doesn't quite fit properly in a Pioneer case. Ho hum.

With the 50G case, you could tuck the open flap under your belt, or into your waistband. In the days when there were belt loops on calculator cases, this was a non-issue. In the late 70's, I carried my HP-29C everywhere on my belt and thought nothing of it. Doing so today draws uproarious laughter from my wife and son ;(
Best regards, Hal

I can imagine what would happen if I wore my Post Versalog in its gorgeous maroon leather case. I don't, but I do walk around with various Leathermans on my belt, with occasional humorous but kind comments from my wife.
