How to care for 9114 batteries?

I've recently had to replace my SLA battery for my 9114B and advised another person to do so too (it fixed their problems).
What is the best way to care for these batteries?
I know that lead acid batteries prefer to be kept topped up, but I am not sure if the 9114B's charger circuit is good enough not to over-charge them.
An idea that I had (which I tacked onto another post earlier) is to place the charger on a timer and allow it to charge for some short time every week.
Any better suggestions?
