HP-41CV Halfnut with serial number beginning 2336
Message #1 Posted by Dan Grelinger on 29 Sept 2008, 6:21 p.m.

There is what appears to be an HP-41CV halfnut with a serial number beginning 2336 on ebay. The owner says it has never been repaired and he is the original owner. Is it correct that there were no HP-41CVs produced with rounded displays before 1985? Ebay link is http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220287388690&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123. My ebay name is kctongo, and this is not my listing.

The Halfnut was announced in the Jul/Aug '85 issue of CHHU Chronicle. The article says the project of making a reduced-cost 41 started in the summer of '83, and since cutting the number of ports in half from the Coconut (please, everyone-- there NEVER WAS was a "Fullnut"!!!) was one of the ideas, it was natural to call the project a "Halfnut."

Then his memory is failing. There is no doubt in my mind that it was repaired by HP. Two irrefutable facts that indicate HP repair:

1) The serial number is for a fullnut and the top half of the unit is a halfnut.

2) The port/battery block is not original 1983.

My take? Most likely a corrosion damage repair sometime after ~1988 or so when they started doing swap outs using halfnuts rather than repairing the fullnuts.

I'd be willing to bet a sum of money that when you open the unit, you'll find a round white label stuck inside the case bottom with a bunch of code letters along with the HP tech's initials and the date of repair.
