Status of iPhone Ports of Free42 and Nonpareil?
Message #1 Posted by Les Wright on 19 Sept 2008, 10:27 p.m.

Hi there,

Forgive the shameless bump, but I asked this already buried in another thread which is a few days cold so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask it in its own thread to see if there is any wisdom out there.

Eric has hinted that Nonpareil is in the works (he has been clear in his frustration with the AppStore approval process) but apart from an old post from April by Thomas it isn't clear to me what, if anything, is going on with Free42.

Forgive me for being a bit in the dark. I haven't been active around here for some months. If this has already been dealt with in recent weeks don't hesitate just to point me in the right direction.

Les

Sorry, but I thought someone would be all over this one. I guess there is no answer right now, or there is not much interest in iPhone based simulators/emulators.

I think I will just write Eric and Thomas directly.

To make an iPhone app, you need time and a Mac. I am unsure if Eric and Thomas have both.

If desperate for Voyagers, you will have to JB your phone. Clearly someone has had both time and a Mac.

Like yourself I look forward to the official Free42 and Nonpareil ports. Especially if Nonpareil will have all the Nonpareil emulators. A 34C would be nice to have.

Thomas HAS written me and suggests that he does have Mac access and we could see something this autumn. It will be a paid app, he thinks going for about 5 bucks to help cover some his costs (he would like to get a Mac mini, for example, and pay the annual dues to Apple required of AppStore developers). The default offering will be the BCD20 floating point version, though he would like to swing it so that either or both the Decimal and Binary versions we are used to are available. He has someone working on a suitable skin. Don't know if he will change the name, since it will really no longer be Free42 :)

I am too timid to fiddle with jailbreaking, and right now I am quite thrilled with i41CXp, especially after the recent bug fix. 12C is proving to be a bit disappointing, but Ricardo, like Thomas and Eric and Anthony, is very responsive to feedback and I am sure we will see a perfected version in Apple's good time.

I have had an iPod touch for almost a year but used it little in favour of the greater storage of my iPod classic. Upgrading the OS and splurging on all of these little apps has been a revelation. I used to think my Palm was fun!

I exhort Eric and Thomas et al. in their work and eagerly and patiently await their product.

Les
