Programming the HP-20b

I've got an application I wrote for a PIC processor that I plan to port to the 20b. I seem to recall reading here somewhere about needing to write code in thumb mode. Is that correct? And does that only apply when trying to keep the original ROM intact? If I re-write the ROM completely am I free to use either mode?
