Re: HP 17 BII ++ (silver) Message #7 Posted by Don Shepherd on 3 Feb 2008, 12:12 p.m., in response to message #5 by Kareem Mokdad
It depends upon what you mean by "buggy L() and G() functions." These two functions did not work at all in early releases of the 17bii+, if I recall correctly, but they have worked for some time now in the current models (I bought my "brown" one about a year ago, and L and G work fine on it as well as the new "silver" edition).
The solver in the "brown" and "silver" versions is the same, and it is different than the solver in the original 17bii. The current solver ALWAYS iterates, it never uses the direct solver, as far as I have been able to tell. This means that it will always evaluate a solver equation at least twice, and if you adjust the value of menu variables within your solver equations or fail to initialize internal variables to 0, you may not get the values you would normally expect. This behavior is different than the behavior in the original 17bii, which always works "correctly."
For example, the equations in the Technical Applications for HP-27S and HP-19B for prime factor and lcm/gcd work fine on the 17bii, but do not work (without modification) on either the "brown" or "silver" 17bii+. I have a modification if you are interested in those.
