HP Calculator Manufacturer
Message #1 Posted by Chris on 29 Nov 2007, 2:26 p.m.

HP's recent announcement that they are outsourcing their camera line to a separate OEM got me wondering. Does HP still make their own calculators or do they re-brand from a seperate manufacturer? Does Agilent make their calculators and HP brands them?

PS: Just got my new HP35S. Very nice. I'm glad they attempted to give it some heft...even if it is still thin. Sad, though, I have dreams of a new LED HP calculator some day. I know, I know, energy consumption blah blah blah... LED was much more fun to look at than LCD!

Maybe I'm just showing my age. My HP 11C is still running strong after 19 years, though, so I can't complain too much...only changed the batteries once!

All of the manufacturing and almost all the physical engineering is outsourced. They seem to be handling most of the software, although if someone qualified is available, they seem to be hired. An example would be that they hired Hydrix (former HP-ACO calc guys) to write the saturn emulator for the new graphing calc.

Thanks!

Is it a known calc manufacturer or is it some house that makes calculators for a bunch of other companies?

I've always been fascinated at how business handles these relationships.

It's Kinpo

They have the 17BII+ and the 33S listed on their site as examples, but they have done many others for HP.

I thought kinpo wrote the new software for the 35S as well?

Dave.

Datexx calculators are also (almost?) all made by Kinpo:

I know they've also produced some models for Citizen, and I'm pretty sure at least one Casio and TI (probably more) were made by Kinpo.

There's also Ativa, Office Depot's store brand, that's used Kinpo for a few models.
