Uploading the HP-28S ROM via Emu48 ?
Message #1 Posted by Jean-Michel on 31 Jan 2007, 1:27 p.m.

Hi, (Bom Dia Gerson)

I'm wondering if I can upload the ROM of my HP-28S via Emu48 an the red-eye of a PC, to put it into Emu28. I've read that it's possible to do it whith a HP-48, but though I do have also a HP-48GX to receive the file, I haven't the memory extension required to receive the 136 ko file. My question is the following : is it possible to use Emu48 to do the same thing if it's running on a desktop PC with IR port?

Thanks.

Hello Jean-Michel,

I think you mean Emu42, as Emu28 is intended only for the HP-28C emulation. Anyway, there's no way to upload the HP-28S ROM to the HP-48GX without a merged RAM card, using the programs provided at Christoph Giesselink's site. Also, the IR ports on the desktop PC and on the HP-48GX don't talk to each other, as you may have read in the documentation. Perhaps someone else has a solution.

By the way, I finally took the time to dump the HP-17BII ROM (64 KB, non-international version). Really nice on Emu42 (Thanks, Christoph!).

Regards,

Gerson.

Gerson, how do you go about this?

I am fond of Emu48, and legitimately use both 48 and 49 roms as I own both calculators. I want to try Emu42.

However, the 42S ROM is not easy to find and I have no idea how one would do the dump from the actual calculator. I sure this is the similar challenge with all the Pioneers.

How did you do it?

Les

Actually, cancel the question. A little Googling directed me accordingly.

Unfortunately, I only have a 48G, not 48GX, so I don't think I have enough available memory to do the required transfer.

I do have a 49G+, but I don't think the Christoph's tranfer utilities are usable with the 49 series.

Rats!

I am a bona fide owner of a real 42S, so if anyone would share their ROM.42S file with me, I would gladly provide whatever proof of ownership necessary to allay any concerns about copyright infringement.

Les

Hi, Les!

Just download the ROM Upload packet. You'll find a link in Emu42 page:

http://christophgiesselink.homepage.t-online.de/emu42.htm

The whole procedure is very well explained and should take less than an hour. You'll need a 48GX though. You can borrow a friend's 48GX for this. Good luck!

Regards,

Gerson.

Some words to the ROM uploading topic.

There're no technical reasons that the ROM upload must be done in one step. Because of bad experiences with the HP48 ROM upload many years ago, I decided to do the ROM upload procedure for the Clamshell and Pioneer calculators as simple as possible. And the simplest way to do this, is doing it in a single step. Then I haven't problems with putting the pieces together in the right order or having missing or double data areas. On the other side we have much more users owning a HP48G than a HP48G+/GX and these are much more having such a calculator with a RAM card.

I will try to make HP28 ROM upload versions where you can enter the upload area. On the HP28S this is more or less simple because J.-F. Garnier began with HP28S rev.2BB ROM entry point list many years ago where I added many entries in the last years. On the HP28C things are different. I began with a ROM entry point list for rev.1CC for hardware tests I needed for the Emu28 development. It contain only very few entry points. On rev.1BB it's even worser, here I have no entry point list with the exception of the one I use for the current upload version so far. For the Pioneers I have no suitable idea at the moment.

Watch this forum in the next time for an announcement of beta testing for a modified HP28 ROM upload software.

Cheers

Christoph

Hello together,

here's http://privat.swol.de/ChristophGiesselink/Emu28/clamadd.zip my solution for uploading the ROM image of a HP28C 1BB/1CC and a HP28S 2BB with a HP48G or HP48GX without ram card as receiver. As I posted earlier the HP28 uploading sofware now wants to have the upload aera as arguments.

For those who has only a HP48G and want to upload the HP42S I want to point your interest to J.-F. Garnier Forum article HP-42S: New Facts. His way is very slow, but working with every HP48. Quite a long time ago I wrote a program converting the dump file into a emulator readable format.

Have fun.

Cheers

Christoph
