HP 49g+ just purchased Message #1 Posted by Joe Edwards on 15 Feb 2006, 1:43 p.m. Hey, I just picked up the most current version of the 49g+, figuring I could just return it if it wasn't worth it. It took a LONG time to decide to buy another one after trying the introductory models in 2003. Overall, I must say that I am very impressed. Sure, it isn't a 48gx, but WOW, everything is so much better on it. 1. No creaking with quite a bit of torque applied to the case. 2. No (with ROM update) missed keys. 3. The keys are SO MUCH quieter than the initial issue. After some thought, I have decided to "get over" my vintage HP hangup and start using this and the 33s on a daily basis. The 33s was returned earlier due to my dislike of the cluttered keyboard, but after playing with the 49g+, it wasn't that hard to get used to it. Hey Les, I finally got the Subject marker straightened out. Very odd indeed. Now if only HP would drop the 48gII and expand the line-up to include the oh-so-needed HP 43s...sigh. Right now I'm starting to fall in love with my 41CX here at work. I've gotten used to the segmentation of the LCD display (I prefer that of the Voyagers!) and I'm reading my user's manuals for the 41CX and loving it. I also love my 55 and many others, so for now, I'm going to keep using my vintage models. Some didn't cost that much to acquire, but others costed me about $300 each due to mint or new condition at time of purchase. So there has been that temptation to sell them all and recoupe some money and stick with just the 33S and 49G+, but I've decided not to do that. Enjoy your two non-vintage HPs. Long live the HP RPN calculator!

Then in December it began to present problems with the black numbers' keyboard most of them went loose and almost like coming out of its place. I received this week a CNA 53400181 Series number as a guaranty replacement. I would like to Know your calculator series number and your opinion on this detail, I mean, this "five" first number series is better than the older ones? Thanks for your atention

That's the newest serial number I've seen or heard of. "534" means the 34th. week of 2005. That would've been around the middle of June. It should be a good one. Just update the ROM firmware with the latest revision. Hpcalc.org has the newest (which is newer than than HP's website). hth, Matt

The problem with the folding calculator is that the flexible cable can, over time, weaken and break. Maybe with better technology we can avoid this. I am just thinking very long term. I do agree that a better resolution screen at least as good as the TI89, and preferably as nice as the Voyage 200 (that would be be rather large). Would HP or TI ever consider a color screen? I just don't think so, but it would be gorgeous! I'm not impressed by their display quality. I don't know if it is possible to make a high-quality color display that doesn't eat batteries.

Actually, I would be plenty happier if the screen resolution were oh, say 240x160 pixels, which interestingly enough is the same resolution as the Game Boy Advance. . . ;-) Seriously though, it would be extreemly easy for HP to double the resolution of the calculator. Simply drop in a higher res LCD and then define the screen controler to appear to the calc OS that it was the same as before. So each "pixel" would be represented by 4 pixels on the new screen. Then using HPGCC you could control the smaller pixels for use with cool programs. In addition, I bet the demand for the calculator would increase 400% overnight once students discovered they could install game boy roms on their calculator. . . ;-) TW
