Spice series: how to determine circuit board type based on serial number?
Message #1 Posted by westridge_cz on 6 July 2004, 8:54 a.m.

I've been reading here on the Museum about the "30 Series Technology and Packaging", and Dave Hicks mentioned that there were actually two types of series 30 calculators. The early ones had a flex circuit in which the IC chips were held in place by a molded plastic spine, and since this design apparently was prone to problems HP decided to go back to what worked before and they came out with a later series in which the chips were actually soldered into place. I was wondering if anybody out there has a list of the range of serial numbers, for all the different Spice series calculators from 31E to 38E/C, that would show which ones were of the early type and which ones were of the later version?
