HP 42s RPN beeping
Message #1 Posted by Raze on 9 Feb 2004, 7:24 p.m.

Hello All,

Please, I need some help.

It is normal that the HP 42s RPN keeps beeping all the time without showing anything in the LCD screen?

It is because of the batteries or need programing? or it is just broken?

Thanks in advance, Raze

To quote an old TV program: "It's dead, Jim"

Most likely fractured solder connections on the 8k ram chip. See http://www.hpmuseum.org/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/hpmuseum/articles.cgi?read=5 for how to open.

Just a caution, the repair requires some very fine, surface mount soldering rework.

Mine started doing this the other day. Bought new batteries and it's back to its old self. So it _may_ not be broken.

If yours starts beeping again, press on the back of the case in the area of the 5 key. If it stops beeping and wakes up, it_is_definitely_broken :^(

Randy is right. I had a 42S with exactly the same symptom. Resoldered the RAM chip, and everything is fine.

Cheers, and good luck, Victor
