Installing MetaKernel on 256K card
Message #1 Posted by Aleph Mobius on 18 Jan 2004, 12:10 a.m.

Hello, I have an HP-48GX and a 256K RAM card that I would like to install MetaKernel on. I understand that it must be installed on both ports of the card for it to work. I installed MK on the card when it was plugged into slot 1 then plugged the card into slot 2 and copyed the 3 libraries to the remaining port on the card with a program called HPPORT 3.1. The 3 libraries are on both ports of the card but I assume that they are not identical byte for byte. Will this be a problem when it bank switches? How can I copy one port to another to make them identical?

Soory if it is a stupid question but, why do you assume that "that they are not identical byte for byte"?

It seems that with many storage devices that files arent always stored back to back. Sometimes they are stored in pieces (hence the need to defrag your hard drive). I suppose it may be different on these RAM cards, I was just assuming. Anyway, I copyed the files from port 2 to RAM then from RAM to port 3 but I dont think I stored them on port 3 in the same order they are on port 2. The ports menu shows the library numbers in a different order.

I think is necessary you copy them in the same order... but I have 128k RAM cards in my two 48GX for the MK, so I have never try to run the MK in larger cards...

Is this the same order I see them listed in the PORTS menu? The RECV program that comes with MK attatches the library so I dont know what order to store them in.

I don't know... In ports menu (and MK Filer) I can see the next order: 1291, 1292 and 1793. I think this is the order. Why don't try it? "La experiencia es la madre de la Ciencia" ;-)

Yes, I see what you mean about trying. I have always been able to get MK to work. I am just trying to make sure it will continue to work like this. It is possible to do it wrong and have it work for a time then it will crash. I suppose I could just use it for a long time and when it doesnt crash I will be satisfied. But how long is long enough? It kind of bothers me to think that it could crash at any minute. I was just hoping that some knowledgeable person on this board could say Do it like this and it will always work.
