Phil Condit
Message #1 Posted by Paul Brogger on 1 Dec 2003, 11:16 a.m.

I note that, amidst (another!) growing scandal at Boeing (this time re: the 767 air tanker deal), Phil Condit has resigned suddenly, at the request of the company's Board. Condit sits (still, I think) on H-P's Board of Directors, and was one of the H-P board members influential in the selection of Carly Fiorina. (I note also that former H-P president Lew Platt has been appointed to a high-ranking position at the reorganizing Boeing.)

I'd guess that the current leadership problems at H-P go WAY deeper than Ms. Fiorina, just as they go WAY beyond H-P.

That would be Paul, not Phil doing the writing, and Boeing, not Airbus, connected with H-P . . .

Boeing lately has been all about becoming an "international corporation" -- they've moved their headquarters to Chicago, and (for their latest creation-to-be, the 7E7) outsourced the wing construction to Japan.

Now, as used to be pointed out in the public tour of the Everett 747/777 factory, wings are/were the very soul of the company -- Boeing has a proud tradition of trend-setting wing design and manufacture. Outsourcing the wings is a shot across the bow of the Seattle/Northwest legacy of Boeing Aerospace.

The new company just won't (some would say "can't") cut its heartland any breaks -- they have to build 'em cheap to compete with Airbus. So driving down labor and tax costs by letting prospective manufacturing locations bid against one another in competition for pieces of future assembly work ("jobs") is key to management thinking.

There has for the longest time been a connection between the Boards of HP and Boeing. The presidents and CEOs of HP often are on Boeing boards.
