HP 41, 67 and 97 fuel tube for reader
Message #1 Posted by Michel Beaulieu on 23 Nov 2003, 8:30 p.m.

I repaired all my 2 card reader i have with modeling fuel hose as it is suggest here and there. After the installation, all my card reader works well for about 25 cards and after that i can hear a hirssing noise when card pass throught the reader and finally a lot of error occurs. I look in the reader and the fuel lind tend to slip on the shaft and finally touch the card reader body and friction occurs. I replace the fuel hose and try it again. works well and then the noise come back. I try to "superglue" the rubber on the shaft but the silicone line dissolved! i try other glue but the tube lost is perfect roud shape.

I also try o ring but i have the same problem in less passes...

What can i do to prevent slowly sliding of the wheel on the shaft?

Another one : what is the method to clear/clean cut these fuel line all around at 90 degree?

Thanks Michel

Tubing is too large

I believe you are using to large of an inside diameter. A good fit should require the tube to have to stretch to fit over the shaft. I have repired over 50 of these using this method and have never had to use any glue.

Try some tubing with a smaller inside diameter.

Orange surgical tubing of the correct OD works well too, the texture provides good gripping for the cards.

Many surgical tubings are made of natural rubber. They tend to go bad after a while. I have silicone tubing readers that were repaired over 15 years ago and are still working fine.

I agree, silicone rubber tubing is the best stuff. Here's my old post on this......

I've done many card reader repairs trying various materials (o-rings, rubber feet and different kinds of tubing). I've made all of these work, but by far the best one and the one probably closest to the original that I've found is silicone rubber tubing 1/4" OD x 1/8" ID. It fits on the gear shaft perfectly without the need to glue it on and provides plenty of contact area with the card (unlike the o-rings).

This is readily available from Small Parts Inc. www.smallparts.com (800) 220-4242. They sell 10 feet of this (enough to repair 1000 card readers!) for $24 (part # 210005 http://www.smallparts.com/products/descriptions/2100+.cfm). BTW, they also sell the 1/8" Delrin balls (4 of them) used in the card reader in case you loose them while doing the repair (25 for $1.45, part # BDLR-2 http://www.smallparts.com/products/descriptions/bdlr.cfm) -- I've never seen these disintegrate, however.

Small Parts tubing is way too expensive (but easy to get). Most hobby shops sell it either by the foot or prepackaged in 3 foot lengths for around 2 bucks. The thing to watch out for is to get some that is perfectly round and has the hole well centered. Bring a magnifying glass and check.
