HP-71B And FORTH/ASM ROM
Message #1 Posted by Jeff on 27 Oct 2003, 6:52 p.m.

Is it possible via the RS232 interface to transfer the FORTH/ASM ROM from the PC to the HP-71B and effectively use this file? Possibly save it onto a 32K Memory Module?

IIRC, the FORTH/ASSEMBLER ROM is hardwired to some address range, so you will not be able to use it from a (soft configured) memory module. Furthermore, I think the ROM is 64KBytes (not Nibbles) so 32K won't be enough anyway. What you see in the catalog is just the LEX files necessary for FORTH activation and for integration into the BASIC environment, the ROM itself is invisible. Sorry!

The ROM is divided into two parts: The floating LEX files you mentioned, and the hardwired ROM. As far as I recall, the overall size is 48 KBytes.

There exists a floating version of the FORTH environment for third party developers, which needs to stay in one continguous 64KB block (at least), so two merged/claimed ports with 32K each won't do.

Word clarification: 'Floating' (or mobile) is an HP term (or part of) for libraries (ROMPARTS) or LEX files which don't have to reside at a specific address. Most libraries/LEX files are of this type, except the BASIC ROM (of course;-), and some others, like part of FORTH.

Regards,

Raymond
