HP49G+ sd-card size
Message #1 Posted by Juergen Rodenkirchen (GER) on 16 Sept 2003, 1:50 p.m.

The other day, I learned at comp.sys.hp48 that the HP49G+ would be able to address 2GB sd-cards. OK, but is there any reasonable recommendation on the size for sd-cards used with an HP49G+? I do know that a reseller in Switzerland sells bundles that include 64MB cards ...

"reasonable recommendation on the size for sd-cards used with an HP49G+?"

For absolute compatibility & low budget, if you are planning or already use a Nokia Phone with MMC, I recommend a 64MB MMC. On the other hand, if you want to use the card with digi-camera, get the largest SD (512MB), but you're better off with a camera using CF. CF can go 4GB with FAT32. You may consider cheapest SD available. The calc doesn't need that much memory. I currently use an old 8MB MMC and it's ok.

The only reason anyone would ever need that much memory is if the calculator supports audio playback that blows mig out of the water (perhaps mp3 or the like). I'm sure the highschoolers would love to have usb headphones plugged into their calculator.

While the 75MHz ARM on the HP49G+ could very well support the compute requirements of MP3 playback, it'd prob be hard to get the audio out - don't know of any onboard DAC, and it is very likely that the USB functionality on the ARM chip on this calc is that of a 'USB device', not 'USB host' - which means it could not "drive" a USB audio adapter or USB headphones etc. as it is a slave device not a master.

Thanks you all very much for your inputs! Espec., thanks to Veli-Pekka for the comprehensive recommendations, but also Brandon and Bill for interesting thoughts on mp3 :-)

Best Wishes, Juergen
