HP-49G+ keyboard issue
Message #1 Posted by Daniel Diggelmann on 8 Sept 2003, 3:25 p.m.

I tried to find out what the reason could be for the keyboard problems with the new HP-49G+. First of all the keyforce is too high. Secondly sometimes keypresses are not recognised. Look at the HP-41 ENTER key at the bottom of my homepage: http://members.fortunecity.de/aerobat/index.html The red dot shows the point where force is applied to the new keyboard whereas the nicely molded 41-key had it in the middle. So clearly the force must roughly double. I could imagine that changing to the original design would bring back the nice keyclick we all wanted. But this would require changing the key molds as well as the PCB layout which is a mayor cost factor. What do you think?

Daniel, thanks for putting up the great pictures so that the rest of us can see the HP49G+ up close. Making the change you suggest would indeed reduce the force necessary, but it would also increase key travel. How does the 49G+ key travel compare to the 41C? I'm inclined to believe that changing the leverage would not affect the reliability of contact closure. That would be more a factor of the dome design and materials used. The classics had gold plating on the PCB.

Does the 49G+ has the same 3D rotation that the original 49G ?
