41C ROM versions
Message #1 Posted by Randy Sloyer on 24 Aug 2003, 11:35 a.m.

An easy one for you 41 experts out there: How does one tell which version rom is in a 41C?

I have an early unit (D/C 1943A) but I can't find a way to list the rom version. The keyboard bezel is a flat finish with a very flat 2 key. The 0,1 and 3 feel different, but the 2 is really bad.

The unit has an HP service sticker inside - maybe they update the ROM or just changed out the processor board?

Is there any way to verify which ROM you have through keyboard entry?

Not directly. You need to read the last word of each system ROM block, which together gives the three chars ROM revision.

If you have an RSU loaded with appriorate ROM images, or CCD or ZENROM, then this is an easy task.

The easiest way is with the service ROM, but I guess few people have that (the image is available, so if you have an EPROM box or MLDL that can be addressed as page 4, then it's possible to run this code). There is a keyboard procedure in 'Extend your HP41', but it's somewhat complicated. However, I can look it up if you need it. Actually, if you're using an HP41, buy this book (or get it from the MoHPC CD-ROMs, or whatever). It's full of useful information. It's not a particularly technical book, but it's the place I look first for user-level information, synthetic programming stuff, etc.

Referring to Jeff's post: "In the book "Extend Your HP-41" pg 642, ROMs - Date Codes - Comments, DDE - 1926-1940 - All Classic Bugs, FDE - 1936-1952 - Bug 3 removed, FEE - 1951-2034 - Bugs 1,2,4 removed as well, GFF - 2035-84?? - Bugs 5,7,8 romoved too."

You may be able to fork it out using the Bugs as a guideline! VPN

There is a way to do it if you have the PPC ROM. It uses synthetic programming tricks, is very cumbersome, and is based upon a technique listed in the back of some very thick (800 page) book (I can't remember which right now).

I've noted a couple of times references to making a ROM.

I realize that with the current market prices for something like the Advantage or PPC ROM that making them- in addition to any copyright issues, would decrease the value of holdings for some merchants.

so I expect that there will be some resistance, but- how do I do this? (I lack a way to burn bits, but I am sure I have access to someone who can)

More to the point- specific to the PPC ROM- si there any way to get permission to do so? I dont' want to sell them, but I'd love to have 3 (I'm a bit paranoid about spares).

I'm kind of sick of reading the manual and not getting to use it :)

Just search for MLDL in the MoHPC archives.
