Different bezel on new 17BIIs?
Message #1 Posted by Scuba Diver on 14 June 2003, 10:36 a.m.

Hello everyone!

I've been looking for a backup 17BII and I've noticed something; the newer units have a different bezel than the older ones...I haven't seen one up close, however the portion that's nearest the display appears to be dark brown in the newer units, whereas it was lighter in the older ones.

Does anyone know if there is a difference? Is the screen or bezel design different?

Just curious.. Thanks! B.

Hi, Scuba;

I have a newer, Indonesian one and they have a different bezel. Also, their case AND bezel background color is black instead of brown; an ugly duck.

I'm not completely sure about it, but I suspect there are three types: some of the first "top-model" Pioneers had a protective "shield", like the one found in all Voyagers, but the newer models came without the protection and they have a recessed bezel frame around the LCD (you can actualy touch the LCD). I saw at least two HP42S with these different bezels. Also, my new HP17BII has a different bezel when compared to another earlier one I saw these days. The only source of information I have about the first HP17B (not 17BII) is the front-cover photo in my HP17B Owner's Manual, where we can clearly see it has a protection over the LCD. I am not sure if the first HP17BII had this sort of bezel.

Not much information, but I hope it helps a bit.

All 17B's had the lens in front of the LCD, all 17Bii's did not.

The original 17B was algebraic only, the 17Bii added a selectable RPN mode.

Luiz, your description of the new color scheme as an Ugly Duck is spot on. The change occurred at about the same time as the 32Sii/20S switch from brown to black. IMO, the problem with the new black scheme is the shifted key functions are printed in a lighter color yellow rather than the older better contrasting orange. Overall, a poor color choice for a make-over. Brought to you no doubt by the same designers as the new 12CP.

I own 2 17BII from Indonesia. One has the old serial number scheme, brown case and keys, light brown bezel and orangeish-yellow shift key. The other one has the new serial number begining with ID, black case and keys, black bezel around the display and a light lemmon yellow shift key. On the backside, the new one has wider rubber feet on the upper part and 2 (instead of 4) wider segments of foot in the lower part. Evolution towards the end ?
