HP-41cv PRGM key not working
Message #1 Posted by Tracy Vermeyen on 30 May 2003, 1:19 a.m.

I recently found my old calculator had corrosion damage from the batteries. I clean everything and replaced the ribbon strip/power connector assembly (long story in itself) and every thing appears to be working, except the PRGM mode won't come on when the key is pressed. In fact, the USER and ALPHA are unreliable, but will eventually work.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose/repair this problem?

Thanks

Sounds like some battery goo got into the switches. You can usually clean them with David Smith's micro-wire brush trick:

I've seen 41's that would not turn on when the leak got into the on/off switch. David's method worked fine to restore normal operation.

Randy,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but there appears to be a plastic film under the keyboard. Do I try to clean above this film, or do I need to break through it to clean? Also, do I try to clean just the inside the cylinder or to the sides of the hole?

Thanks
