HP41C Battery
Message #1 Posted by Jack Ferman on 7 May 2003, 10:43 p.m.

Does anyone remember the battery which had an opening for plugging in the recharger block? I negrlected my 41 much too long because when I went to check the battery it has oozed stuff. Fortunately very little got into the battery opening so the Q-Tip & spit treatment cleaned 'er up just fine. Put N-cells in and the 41 flew like the old days. Are N-cells made Nickel Metal Hydride these days?

Standard N's are alkaline.

The 82120A rechargeable pack had 1/2 N ni-cad cells which are no longer available. You can replace the ni-cads with 1/3 AAA Nickel Metal Hydride cells. They have more than 2X the capacity of the ni-cads. The Battery Station sells pre-fabed 4 cell replacement packs with the proper length tabs for less than $20. Just tell them it's for an HP41 and they know what to do.

You'll need to add some filler to keep the cells from rattling around as they are smaller. I use 1/2" x 1/16" double sided foam tape, works very well.

An aside: Be careful never to put a skinny battery the same length as an N-cell into the 41C. If you ever see one, discard it fast because it is 12 volts instead of 1.5!
