A guide to the modules Message #1 Posted by jose goncalves on 13 Apr 2003, 10:30 a.m. Is there any place where I can find information on the contentes of the HP41 application modules ? I see that there are more than one product for modules with the same name and I read somewhere that there are some different releases for some of the modules. I have now some 25 pieces that I'm trying to organize. These include Math 1, Stats, Home management, securities x (!), games, finance, finance + memory (!), quad memory, x-functions, x-memory etc.

If you have a card reader attached to the HP41, when you execute CAT 2 you'll find the following header: CARD RDR 1x where 1x is the ROM version, where x stands for C, D, E, F, G, H... If you have an HP41CX it's easier: CAT 2 will jump to the headers without showing module's functions. Also, in the HP41CX, internal extra functions (TIME and X-FCN) have different headers: -TIME 2x -CX TIME -EXT FCN 2x -CX EXT FCN For theseROM's, 2x also mean their version and th x stands for C, D, etc. AFAIK, these are the only standard HP modules with a 2x ID. I got this information by looking through ROM images. It got to where I could read the header information without refering to the hex conversion tables. Sad, but true. I am learning mcode in case I ever get an MLDL or try to reverse-engineer the Nut CPU. Your list is much more comprehensive. I guess that I might as well give up on collecting... Thanks, Monte

Re: A guide to the modules Message #6 Posted by Ellis Easley on 14 Apr 2003, 3:29 a.m., in response to message #1 by jose goncalves One of the modules you listed, "finance+memory", is probably a combined module that was built by a third party out of the separate HP modules. I assume "memory" would be an HP41C main memory module, either the original one or the quad memory. If so, it will only function correctly in a 41C, not a CV or CX, since they contain the full main memory already. Similarly, the CX contains the X-functions and the timer modules, so you can't plug another one in. Once you identify the types of modules combined, using CAT for the finance or other ROM module, and experimenting with SIZE for the memory module, you can refer to the documentation for the separate modules, many of which are on the Museum CD-ROMs. As far as I know, HP only made one product which was functionally a combined module, the Math/Stat module. It came with both manuals for the single modules. The HP securities module is labeled "SECURITIES X".

Finance + Memory... Message #7 Posted by Vieira, Luiz C. (Brazil) on 14 Apr 2003, 6:16 a.m., in response to message #6 by Ellis Easley Hi, Ellis; Based on what you mentioned, as a safety precaution and to be sure about it, one should first try the Finance + Memory in an HP41C prior to use (if applicable then) in a CV or CX. I once tested a mainboard (2001) that I did not look carefuly and thought was from an HP41C, and plugged four 82106A on it. It switched to ON without any troubles. I tried SIZE 000 to see [00 .REG. 319 ] and it worked fine. I switched it to OFF, removed the last module and witched it to ON again expecting a [MEMORY LOST ] message. Instead, it started a high-pitch frequency and no message in the display. I removed the batteries and the remaining three modules then I switched it ON again. [MEMORY LOST ] was there, and after SIZE 000 I saw [00 .REG. 319 ] without any memory module. "Que babaca..." ("What a j..k ...") I thought. In Portuguese, of course. It runs fine till today. That's why I think it should not EVEN be tested in an HP41CV or CX, as Ellis mentioned. Existing memory may conflict. And this sort of "hybrid" justifies itself partially when we consider cash flow computations in an HP41C with a financial module. Luiz C. Vieira - Brazil

Printouts will give a good starting point for making sense of the modules. Combined modules would be easily identified. I can lend you my printer, when you come to Campinas, or I can print the catalogs for you.
