How to check an HP41 ?
Message #1 Posted by GE (France) on 2 Dec 2002, 4:23 a.m.

Hello, Recently my friend Bruno asked me how I would test an HP41 before purchasing it. He didn't say what model it was. So I came out with a small list of things to look for : shape, scratches, connectors (module and batteries), and some tests like trying a BEEP, indicators games, a few ON/OFF cycles, CAT 2 (with or without an extra test ROM like the Advantage for example). Maybe you can add some ideas to this list. Also, a quote (with / without manuals, box, extras...) would be of interest. Sorry for bugging this forum with obsolete stuff :-)))

Hi,

You can check for the key-click reaction to test if some of the keys are 'lame' due to extensive use. All keys must have a firm click to it.

Regards, Arnold

Enter ALPHA mode. Press each key three times and make sure it enters (from past experience my finger is calibrated to use three slightly different key press styles that are most likely to show up dirty key contacts). When the buffer fills and you get a beep, press <- to clear it and keep going until you have tested all keys.

Quick check of most logic and memory: press SIGMA+ three times. You should wind up with "3" in the display (if memory was cleared first). Bad memory will show 0 or 1. Also try to SIZE memory to its max value.
