A couple of HP9810 questions
Message #1 Posted by Tony Duell (UK) on 9 July 2002, 4:59 p.m.

A couple of questions about the HP9810 desktop calculator : (1) What _should_ you get if you press 1/x with a cleared stack (in particular, what should the exponent be)? (2) How do you change the angle mode with the optional Maths ROM cartridge. I know it's _displayed_ using the 3 LEDs above the definable keypad, but how do you set it? Thanks in advance for any help.

1) You get 9.999999999 e 98 (weird!)

2) <Table> <1> = degrees <Table> <2> = radians <Table> <3> = grads

<Table> is the "K" key if you're missing the keyboard overlay.

Initially the d/r/g mode is not set to anything, the first press of a tirg function key will set it to degrees -- that's what the manual says.

Thanks for your reply. You see, I have a non-working 9810 on the bench that sometimes decides to do something sane... And when it does, 1/0 does indeed give 9.99999e98 (it was that last digit that worried me -- did I have a register/ALU/firmware problem?). Apparently that's OK. And yes, the maths ROM behaves as you suggest. None of the LEDs come on at first, then the 'degrees' one comes on when I use a trig function. I will try the Table key next time I have the machine in a state to even try to work :-). I do have the overlay. And I do like those little clips on the ROM module to hang the overlay on to store it. A very neat HP idea :-)
