I get emails...
Message #1 Posted by Gene on 16 Apr 2002, 11:12 p.m.

This one came today:

"Help!!! I have 3 electromagnetic engineering tests coming up in the next 3 weeks.  I lost the manuel for my HP 38G years ago and the teacher expects that most of us know how to use the calculus functions on our calculators.  I don't!!!  Any ideas where I might find this information or get another manuel?                                           Thanks,                                             Stephanie"

Gene: I get about 4-5 of these a week. Sometimes it is because someone lost the cover to their TI-83. Do any of the rest of you get ones like this?

It is particularly sad that someone can't search the net for "HP38G manual". I don't think Stephanie will do all that well on this test. I try to help, but ...

No Gene, I don't get emails like those, even once a year. I didn't author a book on how to use a calculator, and my math skills leave a lot to be desired. You are the lucky one! Nor do I get emails from people trying to give me a table saw or old HP calculators, or parts to my flathead Ford... B^)

Well, I don't get as many requests as you do, but they more than make up for it in weirdness.

For example, from late March: "hey this is [name deleted] and i was wonderin if u can send me codes for calculators(when u type in numbers and turn it upside down and it says somethin)i know one and it goes like... [not appropriate for a family friendly forum] ...so if u can find codes like that can u please send them to me thank you"

in a smoke filled room one night in 1974 i found that if i put 0771738 in most any calculator and turn it upside down it spells my last name. i can spell my first name too if i pretend that an upside down 4 is an "n", however the middle inital is right out. eat your heart out (name deleted).

OK, Gene, sounds like your extrabusy working, teaching and calculator collecting self need an offer to help, send her email and I'll write her back.
