Calculators on PDAs
Message #1 Posted by Chris Randle (Lincoln, UK) on 20 Oct 2001, 9:20 p.m.

One or two threads have mentioned the future of calculators - being reborn in PDAs. Those who like the sound of this should check out the HP200LX. If you're unfamiliar with it, take a look at http://www.palmtop.net

It has a built in calculator, an almost exact clone of the 19BII, except with bigger screen to display more data and much faster. This means you get selectable RPN/Algebraic, HP Solve, conversions, stats, plotting, root finder, links to the built-in Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, and tons more.

Since it's DOS based, any compiler you care to mention is available for it. Mine's running Derive.

One snag. It, like everything worthy it seems, is no longer made. They crop up on e-bay from time-to-time and Thaddeus (http://www.thaddeus.com) sell reconditioned units.

Even though it has a numeric keypad, I still prefer to use a "real" calculator when needed. It's a tactile thing.

The current crop of handheld PDAs from HP also include a very nice calculator from LandWare. It is similar to the 17BII/19BII in that it has switchable RPN vs. algebraic notation as well as "fill in the blank" problem solving for TVM, amortization, percentages, etc.

Prior to my HP Jornada 548, I'd carry around my 12C too because the standard calculator on most PDAs is a simple "4-banger" algebraic calc. Like most people on this board, after using RPN for over 20 years, I simply can't use one of those anymore.

Many third party calculator applications are available for PDAs. If people are looking for an HP-type calculator for the Palm OS, one of the best I've seen is MathU from CreativeCreek (www.creativecreek.com).

It's also worth mentioning that several of the early HP handheld organizers, notably the OmniGo series, included an HP 12C emulator, as well as a simple algebraic calculator!
