hp 41 battery powered heater

i had a real scare today. i took out my 41 and it wouldnt turn on. i tried a couple of things; no dice. i said oh well; thats 18 years from one unit, and i've got a spare. i put it back in my vest and got it out a half hour later when i had a minute. it was WARM on the alpha cheat sheet sticker. i tore off the bag and poped out the batteries. i think it smelled like hot plastic, but i've got a cold. i put them back in after inspecting the keybaord and it worked fine. wierd. i hope this is not going around.
