Fixing the HP-9815 Tape Drive - A Question

Apparently, HP cornered the market on drive wheels that disolve. I have an HP-9815A that has a problem with the tape cartridge drive.
The drive works but now has started breaking the tapes. I checked and the drive wheel on the drive is all gummy. It looks like it has disolved rather than having some sticky stuff on it.
Can anyone tell me the spec'd diameter of this wheel?
Anyone tried (or was successful) at repairing that drive wheel?
